Marketing beyond algorithm (yes, it exist!)

đź’Ś THE MARKETING MOMENTUM MAIL

Hey Reader,

Last month's events reinforced that some of the best marketing doesn’t come from a straight-up funnel. It comes from how we move through a room, share a table, or show up in a moment no one truly planned for. Because I certainly did not plan for these gems to drop!

🍽️ THE UNFUNNELLED IMPACT

Forget the noise about "engagement metrics." What truly moves the needle is raw, unvarnished connection.

Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of directing another private Cooking for Charity dinner. This time, the beneficiary is The OTIS Foundation, and the dinner was held in the very home of its dedicated founder, Dr. Andrew Barling.

Andrew, alongside his beloved wife, started OTIS Foundation to honour his late wife, who bravely fought breast cancer. The properties serve as a sanctuary, much like healing homes that give solace to countless others fighting the same battle.

Cooking for Charity is a proud supporter of Dr Andrew Barling's philanthropic work that has spanned decades.

And the culinary talent? Unparalleled. We gathered the founding CFC members – Chefs Pierrick Boyer, Ironchef Ikuei Arakane, Chef Dale Lyman, and Chef Mark Normoyle – whose creative culinary skills were supervised by the humble Chef de Cuisine Jeffrey Tan. Jeffrey founded Cooking for Charity in 2006 and has helped raise over $5million for various charities. He is no longer cooking now, but just like family, we get him to sit and watch us all do the work!

I had 6 volunteers (friends) who showed up to serve, wash dishes, taste the food and share some laughter.

This particular private charity dinner feels like a family gathering to me. Reuniting the core Cooking for Charity team underscored the enduring human need for connection and collective action.

Authenticity trumps algorithm, always.

The most impactful marketing is achieved through real human stories and genuine connections.

🔍 6 HOOK STRATEGIES THAT WORK RIGHT NOW

A scroll-stopping hook isn’t about clever wordplay or marketing tricks. It’s about the time when someone stops because your words spoke directly to them.

  • The Curiosity Gap Hook: Our brains are wired to seek completion. When we encounter an information gap between what we know and what we want to know, we’re compelled to fill it. The key is creating a gap that feels both intriguing and credible.

  • The Before/After Hook: Humans are naturally drawn to transformation stories. They help us visualise possibility and create emotional connection. The key is being specific about both the starting point and the outcome.

  • The Pattern Interrupt Hook: In a sea of sameness, pattern interrupts snap people out of autopilot scrolling. They challenge conventional wisdom and promise fresh perspectives.

  • The Probolem-Solution Hook: Content that directly addresses specific pain points sees 78% higher engagement rates. The key is naming the problem in a way that creates immediate recognition.

  • The Reverse Psychology Hook: In a sea of sameness, pattern interrupts snap people out of autopilot scrolling. They challenge conventional wisdom and promise fresh perspectives.

  • The Social Proof Hook: Social proof remains one of the most powerful persuasion principles. 83% of consumers trust recommendations and real results over marketing claims.

Remember: A hook is a promise to your reader. The content that follows must deliver on that promise.

Do not outsource your thinking to AI

Hi [First name], I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately: Writing consistently builds real skill and resonance. Authenticity is the new advantage as AI rises. A few grounded truths I keep coming back to: Don’t outsource your thinking. Use AI to clear your plate, not replace your creativity or intuition. Most people don’t actually want AI‑generated content. Doubling down on you strengthens your brand. 52 reps vs 0 reps Picture two people sending a newsletter every week for a year. Person A...

MFWF Baker's Dozens 2026

Hi [First name], I took one week off from your inbox. And somehow Melbourne packed in a Food and Wine Festival, a rock cabaret and the start of my 3rd new company of 2026 into the gap. I'm blaming Mad March — and the energy of a brand new cohort of strategic marketing students at RMIT who reminded me exactly why I love teaching. Why MFWF sells out in minutes while restaurants fight for bums on seats The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival has concluded and I've been to Taxi Kitchen and Carnitas...
